Try shopping in this island!!! (Th: เกาะเกร็ด ปากเกร็ด จ.นนทบุรี)
Koh Kred or Koh Kret, this is an island in the Chao Phraya River which was once an island just for making pottery making!
As the main canal was widened several times, this section (island) was cut off and eventually became a separate island!!!
Traveling to Ko Kret is a little more challenging than some other touristy spots. .
You can drive or taxi to Wat Sanamnea (TH: วัดสนามเหนือ), the ferry pier to Ko Kret is just 2-3 baht/person.
Or you can hire a river taxi which cost around 500 baht. This may be a reasonable option for a group.
A taxi boat price of 500-4000 baht depending on the distance and the size of the boat.
It’s a good thing that I have the pier next to my house “Wat Saeng Siritham”, and this boat is 500baht/trip. They will take you to the island and let you walk around for 2-3 hours before bringing you back to the pier.
They also offer to take you to visit the Thai dessert house for free!
Sightseeing…You will see temples, and houses along the river and you will see children jumping and playing the water!
This is the symbol of Ko Kret, the white leaning stupa, this stupa is in Burmese-style. The local people in this island are Rmen (Mon or Burmese)
Their pottery is very famous!
So don’t miss the demonstration to mold the pottery. There’s no sign in English, so finding this is a little hard – and it looks like you walk into somebody’s house! Not only pottery for kitchen use, there is also some cute pottery for your garden.
Depends where you get in but the market is in walking distance (about 2 kg). You will find this market way easy. There is only one narrow walking street with shophouses clustered on both sides. There are so many kinds of things for you to see…shop around.
Try the local Yummy homemade food, they are so many of them here.
You can find something unique here but most of the things, you can find everywhere in Bangkok but don’t forget that you are in the island and this makes you feel different!!!
MUST TRY! “Tod Mun nor kala” This is spicy fish cake with the shoots of local ginger variety. Don’t miss it because I don’t know where else you can find it! Nor Kala is local and grew in Koh Kret…maybe somewhere else but just I don’t know…
As I’ve mentioned, don’t miss the Thai dessert house. They’re making it fresh everyday, and you can see how to make Thai dessert up close. |
So I recommend you to visit this island…Beside the walking street, you can take a motorcycle taxi to go around the island or rent a bicycle for short distance ridding….
By the way, I found out that there are NO car in this island!!!
